Time Series Data from 1973 to 2005

Under the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education Ministry (MoPME) there are mainly four types of primary schools: Government Primary School (GPS), Experimental School (EXP) attached to Primary Training Institute (PTI), Registered Non-Government Primary School (RNGPS), and Community School (COM).

Government Primary School and Experimental schools are fully financed by the Government, while teachers of RNGPS receive salary support (maximum 90%) from the Government (GOB). The community schools are also primary educational institutions having a fixed salary from GOB. Satellite schools are housed in rented houses and the teachers have a fixed honorarium paid by GOB.

Besides these types of primary level institutions, there are unregistered non-government primary school (NGPS), High School-attached primary section (H/A PS) and the Kindergarten (KG). Some of the NGOs also run primary schools.

In addition to these institutions, NGOs offer basic non-formal education for the children (beginning at the age of 8 years).
Besides these nine types of schools, the nation inherits a traditional system of Islamic education known as the Madrasah System and controlled by the Madrasah Board. Similar facilities are also available, to a certain degree, for Buddhists and Hindus, but these are very small in number. Ebtedayee Madrasah is a free standing five-year primary level educational institution, which is parallel to the primary school. They are, therefore, incorporated in primary education statistics. Moreover, there are also some Ebtedayee Madrasah attached to High Madrasah (H/A MAD).
Previously the Upazila Education Officers sent educational statistics directly to the Monitoring and Evaluation Division (M & E) in the Directorate of Primary Education (DPE). The raw data were computerized, processed and reports were generated in the MIS Cell of DPE in collaboration with M & E.
This time data was directly collected from each institution of eleven types. Some problems were faced with regard to data collection from GPS, RNGPS, Community and Satellite schools, some of the institutions did not supply information. For other types of schools' data collection were more difficult (in some cases could not be collected at all, especially Madrasah and Kidergarten).
For these reasons, the national data obtained has been statistically adjusted according to the previous time series data.
6 to 10 years population was projected based on population from DPE published data 1995-2001 by the method of time series analysis.
Government of Bangladesh is fully responsible for GPS and EXP (48%) and partly responsible for RNGPS, NGO (those mentioned), COM, SAT and some H/A PS that together form more than 35% of all Primary Level Educational Institutions. Only 17% schools are private schools.
